The top of a monarch butterfly hanging on the flowers of a goldenrod plant. The insect has its wings folded up above its body.

Untitled 5

A monarch butterfly hangs on the flowers of a goldenrod plant at Eagle Marsh, a restored wetland and nature preserve just outside Fort Wayne in Allen County, Indiana.

I photographed it during the Monarch Festival, an event organized by the Little River Wetlands Project, the organization that created Eagle Marsh. During the festival, visitors could help tag Monarchs that were released. The butterflies will be tracked as they make their way to their winter home in Mexico.
